Surprisingly Fun ~ Omni Horizon
Queen under the Mountain Review: By Andrew Salfinger Rating: 5/10
Grow food, craft tools & brew beer. Watch as they build workshops & bedrooms, farms & taverns. Train your Warriors & Raise your Throne!
Queen Under The Mountain is an indie game from Michael Todd Games who is best known for Electonic Super Joy. Before I go on I would like to say the following review is based on the Early Access version of the game. I will make a full review once the game is officially launched
The game starts you out in the middle of know where, a randomly generated middle of know where. With three dwarfs, a hole with a ladder going down to a cave opening and signposts, these signposts few, thou serve as the players tutorial to the basics of the game.
When I first started the game, I thought that this would be like mosts games nowadays and would hold your hand. This game does not, which is a good thing. The signs give the player some basic information on how to do an objective, but it’s up to you to find out how to complete it.
The game is not story driven; so it’s up to the player on how the game will play out. You’re given three dwarfs now it’s up to you to explore the caves beneath the earth and to explore.
The first objective is simple enough, place a miner blueprint and a pick axe go down the ladder and start to dig, now it gets harder the player needs to make a sleeping area so the workers and dwarfs can sleep. You need a forester to get some wood, but he just gets logs you will need to turn these into planks. For this, you will need a builder and a carpenter to make a carpenter workshop to make a sawhorse and then turn the logs into planks.
This to me came as a surprise. I was expecting a Minecraft type game where the player clicks click, click and done… but this game makes the player work for the smallest of task, and this was surprisingly fun to do.
Now that you can make planks, the next step is to make the burlap. This means you will need a weaver that needs a sewing room, to make one you will need a sewing bench, loom, handloom and a spinning wheel that each needs components to make them. You can hopefully see how this works.
Down the at the bottom of the game you have a simple UI with a couple of buttons allowing the player the access the Object, Shop, and other windows, these can also be open by pressing the 1,2,3 and 4 keys on the keyboard. Here the player can buy tools, blueprints and get more dwarfs but don’t hire more than you need because it will cost gold!
On top of building your cave kingdom, you can also farm both with animals and crops, train your dwarfs into warriors, and you will need them, you are not alone here… down lower they are waiting for you. If you get far enough, you can also raise your throne with a king and queen.
Like I said before you can have warriors dwarfs and take them into battle with the enemy that lives within this cave, but combat is autopilot. You just sit back and watch the fight play out, don’t get me wrong this was fun to watch tho a more skill based combat would be nice.
As of the review, there is not a whole bunch to do in the game besides, building really but this is early access so more will be added to the game later.
The graphics in the game is quite nice with a simple pixel art style to it; tho the dwarfs have no idle animation they just stand there looking out at the world.
I loved most of this game, but it does have it’s problems like I said before, no idle animation, the game also have no sound effects just this one music track the repeats over and over.
The interact window (e.g., shop, object window) gets a bit in the way when trying to put down objects to the left where the window is located. If you hold the object to the left the window will auto hide to allow you to place the object.
Allowing the player to zoom out or just use the arrow keys to move left more, adding something like this would fix this issue. Another issue with the interact windows are that you can hover over an object to learn more about then, the hover text does not always show up so your better of clicking on them to learn more about the object.
The game cost $29.99 USD, which is a bit much for what the game has to offer at the moment.
Sometimes when you give a worker an order they will just stand there and never do it, I’ve had this happen a couple of times to me, had to restart the whole game to fix it and start again from the start.
Also if I start a new game from the main menu then when in the game hit Esc to pause the game and click new game when the new game is started the goal coins you have to buy tools, dwarfs, and other things will never go down no matter what.
I know the last part of this early access review I stated a lot of bugs but the truth is this game is buggy it’s early access after all. With all this said I found the surprisingly fun, the crafting was well made, and the concept behind the game is amazing. I can’t wait to see what the developers will do with this game! Till then see you over the Horizon.
